Walter Mischel

Walter Mischel - كتب

Walter Mischel was an Austrian-born American psychologist best known for his research on self-control and the psychology of delayed gratification. He was born on February 22, 1930, and passed away on September 28, 2018. Mischel is particularly famous for the "Marshmallow Experiment," a series of studies conducted in the 1960s and 1970s at Stanford University, which explored the ability of children to delay gratification.

In these experiments, children were given a choice between one small reward immediately (such as a marshmallow) or two small rewards if they could wait for a period of time. The findings suggested that the ability to delay gratification was linked to various positive outcomes later in life, such as higher academic performance, better emotional regulation, and greater social competence.

Mischel's work also challenged the idea that personality traits are stable across situations, advocating instead for a more situational perspective in understanding human behavior. He emphasized the importance of cognitive mechanisms and the context in which behavior occurs.

His influential ideas and research have had significant implications in psychology, education, and understanding decision-making processes.
