Michelle McNamara was a true crime writer and the author of the acclaimed book I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer. She is best known for her investigation into the Golden State Killer, a serial rapist and murderer who committed crimes in California during the 1970s and 1980s.
McNamara's work, which combined meticulous research, personal narrative, and a compelling writing style, brought renewed attention to the unsolved cases of the Golden State Killer. Tragically, she passed away in April 2016 before the book was published, but it was completed posthumously by her research assistant and husband, Patton Oswalt, among others. The book was published in February 2018 and has been credited with helping to reignite interest in the case.
In April 2018, law enforcement arrested Joseph James DeAngelo, who was later identified as the Golden State Killer, thanks in part to advancements in DNA technology. His arrest brought closure to many of the victims' families and highlighted McNamara's significant contribution to the case.
I'll Be Gone in the Dark has since been adapted into an HBO documentary series, further solidifying McNamara's legacy in the true crime genre.
