Jean-Dominique Bauby was a French journalist and author, best known for his memoir "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" (original French title: "Le Scaphandre et le Papillon"), published in 1997. Bauby became a cultural figure after suffering a massive stroke in 1995 that left him with locked-in syndrome, a condition where a person is fully aware but unable to move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles.
Despite his physical limitations, Bauby was able to write his memoir by blinking his left eye, dictating each letter to a transcriber.
