Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a British writer and physician, best known for creating the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and graduated as a physician. Doyle's literary career began with short stories and novels, but he achieved immense fame with the publication of "A Study in Scarlet" in 1887, which introduced Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. John Watson.

Doyle wrote a total of four novels and 56 short stories featuring Holmes, including classics like "The Sign of the Four" and "The Hound of the Baskervilles." His work pioneered the detective fiction genre and established many conventions that are still in use today.

In addition to his Holmes stories, Doyle wrote historical novels, science fiction, and plays. He was also interested in spiritualism, eventually becoming a prominent advocate for the movement. His diverse interests and prolific output make him a central figure in both literature and the history of detective fiction.
